To the BOCN Treaty Day Planning Committee,

On behalf of Council and our entire Nation, I extend my heartfelt gratitude and sincere appreciation to each member of the Treaty Day Planning Committee for your hard work, dedication, and commitment in bringing our people together once again to commemorate a truly historic milestone: 150 years since the Chiefs of our great Nation signed Treaty 6 at Beardy’s Campsite.

This year’s commemoration was more than an event. It was a powerful reflection of who we are as a people. It was an opportunity to honour our ancestors, celebrate our culture, and strengthen the bonds that unite us as a Nation. None of this would have been possible without the countless hours of planning, coordination, and effort contributed by the committee (BOCN’s Interagency Team consisting of a reppresentative from every dept.) and all those who supported this important gathering.

I was especially encouraged to see the many activities that brought fun, learning, and engagement to our youth. Investing in our young people is investing in our future, and the variety of recreational, cultural, and educational opportunities made available throughout the celebration demonstrated a strong community spirit.

The atmosphere throughout the celebration was inspiring. The performances by the bands and entertainers brought energy and excitement to the gathering, while the Grand Entry stood as a proud and moving reminder of our strength and resilience. Seeing so many community members, families, Elders, veterans, dancers, and visitors come together in unity was a powerful sight that will remain in our memories for years to come.

I also wish to acknowledge the many department information tables and service providers who took the time to engage with our members, share valuable resources, and showcase the important work being done throughout our Nation. These efforts help strengthen communication, build relationships, and ensure our citizens remain informed and connected.

The tipis, cultural displays, traditional teachings, and gathering spaces created an environment that honoured our history while celebrating the living culture that continues to thrive within our community today. Every detail contributed to an unforgettable experience and reflected the pride our people have in our Treaty relationship and our Cree identity.

As we mark 150 years since the signing of Treaty 6 at Beardy’s Campsite, we are reminded of the vision and leadership of our ancestors, who entered into Treaty with the hope of securing a future for generations yet to come. Through events such as this, we continue to honour their legacy and ensure that their stories, teachings, and sacrifices are remembered.

To the Treaty Day Planning Committee, volunteers, staff, performers, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and everyone who contributed in any way, please accept my deepest thanks.

We see your passion and dedication toward our Nation. Thank you reminding us of the importance of gathering together in unity and respect for our shared history.
