Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation Announces New Jumpstart Community Soccer Pitch at Chief Beardy Memorial Elementary School

Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation, Treaty 6 territory—The Chief and Council of Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation (BOCN) are proud to announce a new community soccer pitch at Chief Beardy Memorial Elementary School (CBMES), making BOCN the only First Nation in Canada selected for this national initiative.

The pitch is part of Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities (Jumpstart) national soccer infrastructure initiative, which is building 25 community soccer pitches across Canada by 2029, with BOCN among the first sites opening in 2026. The project is supported by Jumpstart donors, the Government of Canada through Sport Canada, Canadian Tire Dealers, CT REIT, and community partners.

Councillor Sheryl Okemaysim, who oversees the education portfolio for BOCN, highlighted the importance of this milestone, noting that being the only First Nation chosen reflects the Nation’s commitment to youth, wellness, and sport. “This pitch will be a place where our children can play, grow, and connect right here at our elementary school,” she said.

The pitch aligns with Jumpstart’s focus on participation and long-term community impact. Features will include durable surfacing, multiple goals, benches, and accessible entry points, creating a welcoming and functional space for youth and families.

“Jumpstart’s mission is rooted in creating more opportunities for kids to access sport and play in their own communities,” said Marco Di Buono, President, Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities. “This new community soccer pitch at Chief Beardy Memorial Elementary School reflects that commitment in action, creating a welcoming space co-designed with local kids so they can play close to home, connect with their peers, and build confidence through sport.”

Placing the pitch at Chief Beardy Memorial Elementary School ensures it becomes a central hub for sport, learning, and community connection.

Chief Edwin Ananas said long-time First Nations sports advocate Michael Linklater introduced him to the Jumpstart team following a discussion on First Nations sports. “This is more than a field,” Chief explains. “It is a commitment to our children and their health. We thank Jumpstart and all partners who helped make this possible.”
