Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation, Treaty 6 territory — As chief of BOCN, I would like to address last night’s serious and real threat involving a suspected explosive device reported at Dodgies Convenience Store.
We confirm that RCMP safely detonated a suspicious device at Dodgies Convenience Store. While it contained no functional wiring and could not explode, authorities advised it still posed a risk of injury and damage to civilians and residents.
At 1:45 a.m., the RCMP issued an ALL CLEAR for our community after conducting a thorough sweep of all public buildings and schools in BOCN. No additional suspicious items or threats were found.
I want to thank BOCN’s Emergency Management department and the RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit for their quick and professional response. An RCMP investigation remains ongoing: surveillance footage is being reviewed, and DNA and fingerprint evidence was recovered from the device.
To be clear, an attack (or a threat of an attack) that puts our Nation and people at risk is taken very seriously by leadership. We will ensure that those found responsible will be fully held accountable. As mentioned in previous letters, BOCN has opted for a zero-tolerance approach to crime, disturbances, and illegal activity occurring within the community.
We want to reassure residents that every precaution has been taken to ensure public safety. While this incident was concerning, we are grateful no one was injured and that the threat has been resolved.
Anyone with information related to this incident is urged to contact the RCMP at 306-232-6400.
Chief and Council, along with BOCN Emergency Management, will continue to work with the RCMP as the investigation progresses.
Sincerely,
Chief Edwin Ananas
Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation
